Many many datareporting files in my profile
I am running T/B V78.2.2 (64Bit).
I back up my profile (relocated to My Documents many years ago) daily. Every day there seems to be many files generated in the following folders:-
chrome-debugger-profile\datareporting\archived\2020-09\ My personal profile username'\datareporting\2020-09\files\archived\
The files all have long filenames and extension jsonlz4
What are these files. If I delete them they are simply recreated when I next open T/B.
I have both settings in "T/B Data Collection and Use" unticked in Options Privacy and Security.
How can I prevent these files being created or at least not archived every time I open T/B.
I have had a quick look in the Config Editor but can't see anything obvious with my limited knowledge and in view of the Dragons I know well enough not to try changing things on spec.

Thunderbird does not play well in the my documents or any of the other documents folders of windows. Odd things happen. Truly odd things including up to total loss of data due to anti virus scanning of "documents" that are not. A very bad idea really, even if it has worked for you for a decade.
The program has actually refused to use these and other folder since V24 was released. See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/dangerous-directories-Thunderbird-account-settings
Hi Mat
Many thanks for your reply.
I note that you say that T/B has refused to use these folders since V24. I have been using T/B since 2004 on up to 10 machines without any problems and updating to each new version. The reason I create a new profile in Documents is to allow the profile to be backed up 2 or 3 times a day at the same time as all my other documents. This functionality does outweigh the dangers you have pointed out which from experience do seem to be small.
Having read the article it would seem that any folder is fine with the exceptions of system or similar folders. It also says that trying to create a profile in a forbidden folder will give a error message.
I store my data on in "D:\Documents separate from the Windows drive so that if Windows fails I do not lose all my data. This has worked well for many years so I would be loath to change it now.
The problem I stated seems to have only started after the latest update to 78.2.2 as I have never noticed it before. Maybe it is a bug which has just surfaced. I will just wait a bit and see what happens in future updates. Should it continue It is simple enough to create a small batch file to delete these files/folders (they are just re-created by the program next time it opens).
In your experience does this occur in other default installations or is it just in mine.
Regards Alan
I hope you can understand my reluctance to change but many thanks for your input.
Does anyone have any idea how to prevent these files from being archived. It results in 4 new files being added every time T/B is opened and soon ends up with hundreds of useless files taking up MBs of space. This never seems to have happened in versions previous to 78. I have looked in configuration editor but to be honest if I search for "datareporting" I can't identify anything specific which might help.
This is also happening on my wife's computer which is a standard install and also only started with Version 78.
HI
For the files in the folder Thunderbird\Profiles\"My personal profile username"\datareporting\archived\
Edit this boolean : toolkit.telemetry.archive.enabled = false
Close TB , delete the folder . Open TB , close It , no new folder .
For the other , I don't know .

Hi Cedrc
Thanks for your post after such a long interval.
Unfortunately I had already set this to false last November in the configurations editor and the folder "Archived" does no longer exist.
Thanks anyway, always grateful for any advice.
Hi No problem , I has the same problem with my backup . I have found your answer whem I was investigating . Finally I have found this bolean and I have shared .
Although I still have the problem I do still try to investigate possibilities when I have the time. If I come up with anything I will get back here.
Cheers Alan
Your problem is for the other folder ? ( chrome-debugger-profile\datareporting\archived )
Edit:
For Thunderbird\Profiles\"My personal profile username"\datareporting\archived\
Try this :
toolkit.telemetry.archive.enabled to false
toolkit.telemetry.enabled to false
toolkit.telemetry.unified to false
