"User name and Password not accepted"
I've used T'bird for years. Yesterday I was going around with Amazon and Google trying to get a new Fire tablet to do what I needed. (It doesn't). Anyway, at some point my T'bird started giving the message "User name and password not accepted". I can still use my gmail account on the browser, so its still working and I've made no changes to it. I've looked through the help suggestions, but nothing helped.
If there is some corrupted setting, I will try to fix it if I can. I can do an uninstall/reinstall, but I have a lot of information in local folders that I don't want to lose. What steps can I take to ensure that the local folders aren't lost when the program is removed?

Is the gmail account pop or imap ?
If pop then it is likely gmail has just decided to block you deliberately and you need to logon to webmail account and enable the option to 'Use less secure apps' again.
If imap are you accessing using Authentication Method: Normal Password or OAuth ? If 'Normal Password' then same issue as POP. But I would suggest you change the incoming and outgoing smtp Authentication Method to OAuth. Then gmail will prompt you to logon to check you really are you saying Thundebird wants access. Then a token is stored in same place as the passwords and from then onwards the token is used by Thunderbird instead of the password.

Great! Works fine now. Didn't know about that Google switch. Thanks. Terry
