I have just set up a Master Password on my iMac as I am concerned that anyone opening Firefox on my computer has access to my passwords. But it only worked once and now does not work even though I thought I was being careful to record the new password. How can I reset it or recover it or cancel it? I can still see logins and passwords on my iPad but concerned that the master password will sync with my iMac and not sure how to stop this. My iMac is 2009 and running OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

If you cannot remember the password, you can reset it by following this article:

WARNING: Resetting the password will delete/purge all your saved login data.

The master password is only used locally or a device (each device can have its own MP) and is never send to the Sync server.

Are you use that you hadn't accidentally set Caps Lock when you created the MP ?
Are there special characters in the MP that could be causing problems ?

If you use the Time Machine on your device then you can try to restore previous versions of logins.json and key4.db in the Firefox profile folder.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.
