Then you will need an addon. TBSYNC appears to be quite popular in dealing with carddav https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/addon/tbsync/

But it does require another addon to work for your case as the sync addon is for sync generally not dav specifically. https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/addon/dav-4-tbsync/

Is the address book hosted on an LDAP server?

In the address book window File > new > LDAP directory
