Cursed gremlins! At 1:15 today the earthlink.net were downloaded to my mailbox when I open Thunderbird. It works, for now. The mystery now is why not before.

I noticed that you marked my post about the scammer (who's post has been removed) as Chosen Solution;   that must have happened inadvertently, cause I of course didn't solve your problem .....

You can remove that mark by clicking on the "Undo" button.

I think that your question needs to be moved to the Thunderbird support forum, so I will flag this thread and ask a moderator to do so.
