Password database locked - can't store passwords
Windows 7 Premium Home Edition (64-bit) (I know, I know - use Bitdefender and Malwarebytes - systems too old for M$ #10 Grabbing For Dollars), TB 68.8.0 (32-bit).
Database wouldn't let me add or update passwords. Added KeyPass (Password editor add-on outdated, so removed). Couldn't log on to one account. Get "Enter Your Password" with notice under input "You are logged ou of your password database (it may be locked), then a box "Launch Keepass", click it and nothing ... the box just sits there. Without KeyPass, it just asks for the password and you get in.
I erased all the accounts in the "Options" - "Security" - "Saved Passwords", no problem. I just can't put them back or add any. I re-installed TB 68.8.0 over itself and nothing changed.
I know you folks are under presure like us all, but please see if there's an out-of-the-box fix for this besides ripping it out and doing a total re-install of TB.
Thanks in advance for being thee and stay safe.

Thank you for pointing me to that link. I didn't delete anything, but I did follow these folowing instructions and it worked like a charm:
No checkbox to remember passwords
It can happen that you will find no checkbox in Thunderbird to remember passwords. To change this, you will need to edit the prefs.js file, located in the Thunderbird profile folder.
Close Thunderbird and open the prefs.js file in Notepad or another editor (make a backup copy of prefs.js first, as a precaution). Find the following line: user_pref("signon.rememberSignons", false); Change the value from false to true. Close the Notepad or editor window and save changes. On the next startup of Thunderbird you should find the checkbox for remembering the password in the password manager.
Thanks everyone for your help.

I wouldn't use any 3rd-party app manage TB passwords, but I think the problem may be that AT&T now requires a secure mail key in place of the password.
I was uing "Password Editor" (TB app), updated Thundrbird (currently 68.6.0), "PE" out of date, KeePass is also a TB app.
The problem is that I get the notice that "the password database my be locked", I go to options and was able to delete the passwords but - with no e-mail app installed whatsoever - Thunderbird will not save any passwords. I deleted the one that were in there in case I'm being rifiled ...
A 'locked' database indicates there is some app besides TB controlling TB passwords. Password Editor and KeePass may claim to work with TB, but they are not recommended - especially if they cause the kind of problem you're facing. Just use the password manager in TB, and as a separate matter, use a secure mail key for AT&T.
"Just use the password manager in TB ..." ...
I'd love to. TB will not save any passwords.
That's the problem.
Have you removed all the password addons ? If no, then remove them (not disable) and restart Thunderbird.
Are you using an imap account? If yes, have you selected to use OAuth as the 'Authentication Method' in both account and smtp server settings? If no, then change the server settings for Authentication method.
If pop or imap and you do not want to change 'Authentication Method' to 'OAuth2', Have you created an application specific password known as a secure mail key for AT&T - as per instructions by AT&T ? If no, then create one by following info at the link provided in earlier comment by sfhowes. I would recommend you read info at that link.
The normal password will get refused by AT&T and therefore not saved if you need a secure mail key. So, at the prompt to enter password, enter the secure mail key for the account, (not the normal password you use to get access to webmail), select the checkbox for password manager to save password. then click on OK.
First, thanks for those who have answered so far.
Now, please understand - TB's database is Locked/Inaccessible.
There is no normal "checkbox for password manager" anymore.
The passwords that I did have there were 'OAuth2' as well as regular passwords both with ATT and AOL. They all worked before with no problems. As I have stated before, I have removed both the outdated password add-on, then, when I installed and tried "KeyBird", it was the one that put up "locked out of the password database" notice.
Again - There is no normal "checkbox for password manager" anymore.
TB's database will not accept any passwords. It is locked some way.
Are you using the Bitdefender Password Manager?
As was said, remove all password manager add-ons, that includes KeyBird. Restart TB and use its native Password Manager to store them. If you've deleted all passwords from the vault, force it to sync "Get Messages" and it should prompt for the password(s).
I have said that I cannot "access for saving" the password database without any password add-ons whatsoever. When TB prompts for an account's password, there is no checkbox for saving the data (please see attached jpg).
Help/Troubleshooting, click Open Folder to open the profile folder, close TB, delete cert9.db, key4.db and logins.json. This will delete all passwords and should make the box appear in the password prompt to save passwords. Restart TB and enter the password or mail key when prompted.
