Message saying mail server disconnected

On my PC I would occasionally be asked for my password, now entering that does not work and a secondary message pops up in the corner of my screen saying mail server disconnected. I can access mail from my phone. Obviously something has changed but no idea where to start looking. I have started with add-ons disabled, I have switched of firewall and anti virus - no luck. They were active before this happened anyway so can't imagine it is either of them.

Norton appears to use version numbers in the form 68.7.0 the fine grained "check" means that it has to establish the credential of each monthly updated Thunderbird. The Symantec folk appear to take anything up to 2 weeks to automatically update this stuff. So you regularly have to hold the hand holding software's hand while it learns manually from you. That is why it appears odd to you and eminently normal for a Symantec product to me.

Who is your mail provider? Is the account IMAP or POP? Do you have an anti virus product or an anti spam or scam tool installed? Do things work better if you disable them.

I would have a wild guess you email provider is somehow linked to yahoo. but that is a total guess based on their propensity for change without notifications their users understand.

IMAP, I've tried disabling anti virus, and firewall- no luck. It was Yahoo, but now BT. All setting as per BT requirements.

Hello there burnfield We have read your message. We try to help you.

can you still access your account settings? change your SMTP server name back or in Thunderbird?

All e-mail addresses seem to be working now. Not at all sure what solved it. I made some changes to the Norton Firewall. As I had not changed any of these setting prior to access to my e-mails stopping not sure why this appears to be the solution. Anyway problem solved and thanks to those who suggested solutions.
