Roadrunner stops message archiving

This just started happening after the most recent update to Thunderbird 68 and my cfl.rr.com account. I already know about the "Unrecognized command: ID" issue and have bypassed that. I like to archive my email to local files, something very few mail clients do anymore. I can try it once from my Unified Inbox (as I have several email accounts to cover), and it works up to the Roadrunner messages. There it stops, and it refuses to archive anything until I quit Thunderbird and start it up again. No error messages appear anywhere I know to look, and I've been using Thunderbird for years.

I found the problem. Something in my profile was corrupted. I built a new one and all is well.

Hi IMAP or POP email? Can you provide step by step detail re the process you use for archiving to local files? Using a filter? Multiple select? Pressing A to move to TB's own archive system? Something else? Thanks, Agnes

Oops. Not thinking straight. IMAP.

To archive: 1. Select fewer than 256 messages in the Unified Inbox (as I've found that more than 256 causes issues as well). 2. Press A.

My other email accounts archive, but cfl.rr.com via mail.twc.com or mail.brighthouse.com causes the problem. I archive to Local Folders, done by year and month using TB's seeing for such things.

Hi Can you check whether those accounts download complete email or headers only? Just a guess, but if the content is being pulled from RR for 250 messages at once, it might take a while and appear not to respond. If the setting is different for the accounts that archive successfully, that could be why. Does it work if you archive only one or two at a time? Agnes

Should be headers only, but global searching (gloda) might be downloading them all. Unable to check at the moment. Settings are the same as the other accounts. I should also note that this had been working for several years already. Doing one or two doesn't help when it hits a RR message.

I believe this is due to a change in a recent TB update. Every bit of evidence points this software engineer to that.

I should also note that this worked fine back before TB gave the error mentioning the ID command. I haven't checked the release notes or the source repository yet, but I suspect a change to the IMAP code.

Ok, so doing a few works, but not for RR messages, and the other two accounts you mentioned. If moving to archives located in local folders, TB would be pulling the whole message. As a software engineer you are better qualified than I to do a series of logic tests to narrow down fault conditions and possible causes. Then if there is a bug, you might search for similar issues reported on Bugzilla and help define and suggest ways to fix it. All help appreciated!

Just as an observation, I think RR, Brighthouse and TW are all actually RR. So, logic suggests that if those three don't work, and other accounts not associated with RR do, maybe the change was with RR servers rather than TB.

I just tried installing the last version of TB that worked, and it doesn't, so you were right, Agnes. Something about their IMAP server changed that affects TB, but not Apple Mail nor Android Mail.

I also noticed that it gave me an error about not having enough disk space, which makes no sense with over 200GB free. Perhaps there's an internal size limit to the file format that my other providers don't have?

It looks like it's time to say farewell to TB and go with Outlook 365 instead.

Hi Joe Hmm, interesting. Score one for logic, but I have no idea what might have changed that affects just moving messages from IMAP to local archive. Could it also be affected by using Unified Inbox? Curious indeed. Agnes

If you are inclined to dig further maybe something in these recent questions might shed light. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1277663 https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1278713 https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1273029 Note that Spectrum is also RR, TW, Brighthouse.

It's not Unified Inbox. I tried it directly from the RR inbox. Delete works fine until the problem hits, then I can't even move a message. It's almost as if a response from the server never arrives, and TB doesn't time out.

I did look at those other articles, and none of them applied or helped.

Since TB is considered an insecure app by GMail, the clock had been ticking down to leaving my second favorite email client (Eudora was #1).

Oh yes - I loved Eudora! Still miss it sometimes. Best wishes for your future with Outlook. Agnes
