I used to get warnings before I could delete a message from 'trash' but recently I found the warning is missing so I permanently deleted something I was reading in the trash folder. Is this option still available? How do I turn it on?

There are two things to consider: if you don't get a confirmation dialog when emptying Trash, there is a preference that controls that.

To have a confirmation for deleting specific messages, use the ConfirmBeforeDelete add-on (see picture).
