I want to use a domain containing the letter "ä" which is accepted but out of the ASCII range - comfiguration halts
As I understand letters outside of the classic 7 bit ASCII are accepted in domain names. My current example is träibatn.se . The domain is accepted and I have set up an account with the privder. When accessing the account via web mail everything is fine. I sent a mail to another account (an outlook.com account) and it came throug correctly, as well as a reply. So - why can I not set up the Thunderbird interface som it accepts träibatn.se. By changing to an address without the letter ä makes it possible to start configuring Thunderbird... So - either I am the one doing the mistakes or is there something which could be improved in the program?

The story appears to start here in 2003. https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Internationalized_domain_names_support_in_Mozilla
Then I see this bug for SMTP/Sending https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1563891
But I tried it out and I think we have a bug. at the least it could tell you why it thinks you are wrong. So I filed a bug. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1617119
Just a try and see suggestion. Try adding the account as traibatn.se. When it fails or not, click the manual config button then in the next window the advanced button. Now try changing the server names to what they should be. ie träibatn.se instead of traibatn.se and then see if the account will get mail.
That should determine if the wizard is the issue or the actual account manager.
I looked at your current bug post and we see the situation in the same way. As soon as I try the manual config and insert the "ä", that window is dropped and I am returned to the start page for setting up an account. The account as such works as a web mail with the ISP and it can send to and recieve mails when testing via a outlook.com-account.
Sorry to need to make you fight this topic too, but the world is more and more one country and mankind it's citizens..., even toug we use different langages.
I would still like you to go through the dummy config without the ä and insert it after you have accessed the Advanced button to get to the completed setup account.
From what I am seeing https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=811272 this is all about a validation on that page, so if we let it get past that by changing the domain name a successful configuration can be made in the account manager, we just can't get there without fooling the wizard.
I did set up an account totally independet of the "difficult" domain (träibatn). Moreover, it had to be on a different server (one.com) as I have no other domains on the troublesome server (egensajt.se). The guide helped me to set it up as expected. Now I have changed the settings in server settings window within TB. All settings are in agreement with the instructions from the provider (egensajt.se). The imap-settings relating to one.com is deleted and the send-settings related to one.com is changed into the egensajt.se settings. Ths no explicit protests from the program is noted. (optimism)
When trying to retrieve a mail, the program asks för imapsettings for one.com. Restarting the program does not alter the situation. It does
When trying to send mail I get an error response including "Server answered: 501 5.1.7 Bad sender address syntax. Checking e-mailaddress and experimenting with different port- and security settings does not alter the situation...
So I would say that the dummy config is falty, also the module identifying smtp-sources (as it does not acknowledge my serve changes) and the send structure for some reasons.
My attempts have not reached the mail area of the info@träibatn.se account, as no new things have appeared in the incoming folder or in the sent folder...
So I would say that the dummy config is falty, also the module identifying XXXX IMAP-sources (as it does not acknowledge my serve changes) and the send structure for some reasons.
