Emoticons corrupt... hard to delete text when using. Is there a fix?

I used to add an occasional emoticon to my emails, but it seems like there was a change many months ago that corrupted them. Now if I use one everything after it is hard to change. Also it's hard to delete them once they are in an email. I keep waiting for the Mozilla programmers to fix the problem but it never happens. Anyone having the same problem? Any ideas how to fix it? Reinstall Thunderbird? Help!

I don't normally use emojis, but just tried it, and agree the built-in ones are very clumsy to manage, if not impossible. I installed Emoji, and most of these problems disappeared.

Thanks! Didn't need that many emojis but that add-on works. The ones in T-bird worked fine for many years... wonder how they messed them up? Thanks again.
