Just updated to 68.2.0. The font in the folders is tiny! Can't understand why Thunderbird does this. I've read through other posts that this issue is mentioned, but I can't find anything helpful. I'm a senior citizen and I'm not a computer expert. I can't find an extension that will work anymore. Is there an easy fix that I can understand?

There is a way to change the fonts for the Folder and Threads Panes that requires one change: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1269361

Thanks for the reply! How do you set preference to the default (-1.0), 1.25 and 1.45.

Ok. It took me over an hour to find Config. Editor. Like I said, I'm a senior citizen and not up to speed on computers. I changed it to 2 and it's much better!

This issue has been going on for a long time. Why isn't it ever fixed by Mozilla?

The Theme Font & Size Changer add-on used to perform this kind of function, but the add-on developer has not yet produced a version compatible with TB 68. In the meantime, the preference change is available, as well as more detailed methods using userChrome.css files.

Since there are ways to accomplish this, if somewhat obscure, I guess the developers devote their efforts to more pressing issues.

OK, but I wonder why the developers release Thunderbird with tiny font?

'Tiny' is a subjective term. The default fonts look fine to me on 15" and 22" screens with standard Windows display settings.

that's rubbish the font is stupidly small and no easy way to deal with it, doesn't matter what size monitor you have

re :that's rubbish the font is stupidly small and no easy way to deal with it, doesn't matter what size monitor you have

It not ok for you that is clear and I'm sure there are others who may also have issues. But what you call tiny depends upon your eyesight and how your computer is set up. I see everything perfectly ok, so do not assume others see the same on their computer as you see on your computer because they do not.

The computer 'Display' settings can effect what you see and can help to tailor your computer to suit your particular needs.

Thunderbird Font etc is perfectly ok for me on a 22 inch monitor. Using screen resolution 1920 x 1080 The computer screen resolution would effect what you see. The more pixels per inch, the smaller the desktop icons etc etc.

I've known people get a new computer with higher screen resolution preset and then they have issues with things suddenly appearing to be smaller. In which case reducing the screen resolution can sometimes be an easy fix.

All other settings as per Windows OS standard. eg: Scale and Layout is 100% (Recommended) This setting will also effect what you see regarding size of text, apps and other items.

People do have different eyesight requirements and people do have different computers and not all are set up the same. A specific size font on one computer can appear a different size (larger or smaller) on another computer depending upon other settings.

This is also one of the reasons it is not advisable to force specific text sizes on recipients of emails.

In Thunderbird, there is a way of increasing overall font etc size in the general User Interface. Some people might say it is not exactly an obvious way and I will go along with that to a point, but that's why you come to this forum - for guidance.

However, the actual process is easy to modify settings by following these simple instructions.

For those using 'Windows OS': If you use the hamburger Menu icon on the 'Mail Toolbar':

  • Menu icon > Options > Options > Advanced > 'General' tab

If you use the top 'Menu Bar' toolbar:

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > 'General' tab
  • click on 'Config Editor' button.

You may see a friendly warning accept the risk.

  • In search type : pixels
  • look for this line: layout.css.devPixelsPerPx

the default value is -1.0

  • double click on that line to open a small window OR right-click the preference and select 'Modify' which allows you to change the 'Value'
  • You can try values such as 1.20 or 1.25 or 1.5
  • click on 'OK'

You will instantly see an increase in font size, so you can modify the overall font size of the user interface to suit whatever you prefer.

There is alternative way by creating a 'userChrome.css' file. If you would like to try that method then take a look at this forum question: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1267898

Usually the default (recommended one) should be ok. 1600 pixels across the horizontal and 900 pixels in the height. Although it does depend upon the screen size.

It is a personal thing and you may have issues with other programs that you may want to improve. Decreasing the numbers, increases the size of each pixel.

Try: 1366 x 768 Note the difference in general, not just in thunderbird. After all, if it is just thunderbird then you can modify the settings as previously mentioned.

Thank you very much, Toad-Hall. This layout.css.devPixelsPerPx method worked perfectly for me, using Thunderbird version 68.4.2.
