I corresponded with support of Boxcrypto for a long time. They say it's a Thunderbird problem.

Did this ever work? If so, what has changed?

This worked on Windows 7, however, does not want to work on Windows 10.

I don't think this is related to Thunderbird. Therefore I don't really know what else to suggest. You may try to replicate that scenario with another program than Thunderbird, and see whether you'll run into the same problem.

I tried the same script with the THE BAT email program. In this case, everything works without problems.
