Have tried running OS (Windows 10) in safe mode, thunderbird in safe mode, reinstalling thunderbird, using a new profile from a know working account, I have removed all add-ons and extensions including Lightening but still I get a crash. Sometimes it happens as soon as I click on the paperclip but sometimes whilst browing for the file to attach. I have noticed that my HDD activity jumps to 100% at the same time. I have checked the HDD for SMART errors, CHKDSK and also using manufacurer extended test suite and no HDD errors reported. Using latest verion of Thunderbird. Have tried disabling anti-virus (Avast) but still no luck. Crash id is bp-e4697d4c-5bde-492e-8dc6-f8ff80190222.

Seems to be crashing on msoshext.dll msoshext.dll's description is "Microsoft Office Shell Extension Handlers" https://www.freefixer.com/library/file/msoshext.dll-103665/

Did you have an older MS Office and updated it? Did you download the 32 bit download instead of the 64 bit download?

Thanks for your help. Win10 update has regularly updated with office fixes but no changes or updates have been done manually to office (2010 version). I have now tried to repair office to see if that fixes the DLL issue but that is also failing with an error 2349 which might indicate I have a wider problem here. Next step might be to reinstall a clean copy of office? I still suspect my HDD although cannot identify error. Thanks

Have you tried uninstalling Avast? Just a guess on my part. https://www.avast.com/en-au/uninstall-utility

Hoping have fixed it with you help. Uninstalled office (took a few attempts) and reinstalled clean copy and seems to be working now. Time will tell.
