Bug: Thunderbird sends read confirmation when I delete a (spam) mail

Apparently it has been an issue for a very long time that Thunderbird sends read confirmations even when the user specifically configured it not to do so. This one is particularly nasty though, because by sending a read confirmation on unsolicited emails that I in fact did not read at all but deleted right away I am giving a wrong signal to the spammer who then starts sending "reminders".

Is there some hidden config setting where I can force Thunderbird to obey my settings? If there is a developer reading this: could you please fix this wrongful and extremely annoying behaviour?

Chosen solution

Should one meet with this same issue, I found the following solution on the Net:

The Exchange administrator needs to get into the Exchange management shell and for each user he needs to run the command:

Set-CASMailbox -Id "user alias" -ImapSuppressReadReceipt $true

To activate the change the user must reinitialize the IMAP connection - in effect restart Thunderbird.

Thunderbird does not send 'Return Receipt' emails without you saying it should be done.

DSN receipts can let a sender know when the recipient's server received the message, but it does not tell them if it was read etc. But, Thunderbird is not a server, so it is not involved with this request.

Do you allow emails to display remote content? Thunderbird by default does not allow it, but users can manually override this. Do not move a mouse cursor over email content as you may trigger hidden icons etc.

check setting: 'Menu icon' > 'Options' > ' Options' > 'Privacy' uncheck - 'Allow remote content in message' click on 'Exceptions' Remove anything that should not be in the list. click on 'Save changes.

Is computer setup to auto respond to 'Return Receipts' 'Menu icon' > 'Options' > ' Options' > 'Advanced' > 'General' tab click on 'Return Receipts' button Edit as required click on all 'OK's.

Note: it is also worth checking the Account Settings > Return Receipts for each account as it is possible to overide the settings as described above on an account basis.

Some servers eg: work/university email accounts They can incorporate 'Read Receipts' mechanisms on emails which are being sent and received on same server. Note these operate on imap mail accounts, so server will detect changes. But this is an entirely different situation.

Never Mind...

I should have tested this more thoroughly before posting. As it turns out it seems the mail server is doing the override on the client settings. It works correctly when I connect the client to a Dovecot server. The wrongful behaviour happens when I connect to an Exchange server. Wasn't a big fan of MS products before this, but this is just maddening.
