Does the question of compressing 5,5 Gb have an impact on the connection wit internet of the computer itself? My laptop is getting disconnected from the interne

more options

Dear all,

Since some months, every time I open Thinderbird, I'm asked if I would compress 5,5Gb. The specialists of my computershop advised me not to do so because compressing such an amount of data could deliver me lots of damage/loss of data. So I refuse to do this every time I open my computer. But since a while I get dissconnected from the internet - message: The DNS server is not reacting. When I solve the problem, the internet is getting back but it is not normal that this is happening... Do you know if the question asked by Thunderbird could be the reason of the interuption of the connection with internet (the wifi connection always stays intact/OK at that moment)

Thank you in advance for your reaction.

Kind regards

Kristien

'Compacting' is not compressing. They are two entirely different things. Perhaps the wording got lost in the translation.

Compacting removes hidden marked as deleted emails which are bloating your mbox files, thus cleaning up files and saving space. Whilst you may delete emails from any folder, usually Inbox, Drafts and Junk get the most activity when it comes to deleting. Read info: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Thunderbird_:_Tips_:_Compacting_Folders

As you have not been compacting your files and as you are not sure whether this lack of maintenance could have caused any corruption of your mbox files, I recommend you do the following. Note: Usually, you do not need to completely empty the Inbox in order to compact it, but in your case, on this occasion, it may be a good idea.

  • Move all good wanted emails out of the 'Inbox' into other suitable folders for storage.
  • delete any emails you do not want.
  • When Inbox is empty, right click on 'Inbox' folder and select 'Compact'.

Suggest you also Compact 'Drafts' and 'Junk' as these folders can also contain a lot of hidden marked as deleted emails.

  • right click on 'Drafts' folder and select 'Compact'.
  • right click on 'Junk' folder and select 'Compact'.

Suggest that in future, you compact on a regular basis. I delete a load of junk and other emails every day, so I compact Inbox and Junk at the end of each day to keep files healthy.

You can set up a lower threshhold when Thunderbird suggests you auto compact.

  • 'Menu icon' > 'Options' > ' Options' > Advanced' > 'Network & Disc Space' tab
  • Select checkbox 'Compact all folders when it will save over eg: 10MB in total'
  • click on 'OK'

If you have an imap mail account you can also set up the account to Expunge (compact) Inbox on exit.

  • Right click on imap mail account and select 'Settings'
  • select 'Server Settings'
  • select checkbox 'Clean up (Expunge) Inbox on exit'
  • click on 'OK'

Thank you a lot for this information which I will use . It remains a challenge with more than 500 emails in my inbox ... But the part of the link between the need for compacting and the interruption of the internet I did not find in your answer. Thank you in advance for your reaction Kristien
