Why does Thunderbird no longer open to inbox? SOLVED caused by excluding Thunderbird from CCleaner's draconian deletions
I am FURIOUS!!! I was recently ignorant enough to download updates AGAIN and now Thunderbird doesn't open in the inbox as it has for the last 3 years. How do I fix this and what have I done to you to cause you to feel the need to do this to me? I was in a good mood, checking email and an annoying little pop-up encourages me to update. And I acquiesce. NOW every time I open Thunderbird, regardless of the fact that it was last open in the inbox which is preferred and how it has worked previously, I get the view with Check Email, Accounts, and Advanced Features. Now I am in a horrible mood and my computer has a mind of its own and is acting in a manner in direct opposition to my wishes. BTW I went from good to bad and now it will take who knows how long to get my computer operating the way I want it to.

Thanks for all of the input. I have set both Firefox and Thunderbird to NEVER look for updates. What I need to do is learn to write code so I can go in and correct these issues myself, but at 58 I feel I am a little behind the curve.
Recap: CCleaner was erasing session info which was preventing Thunderbird from remembering the folder it was in when it closed. I unchecked Session under Applications tab in CCleaner and Thunderbird is now able to remember the folder it was in when closed.

Hi, In order for Thunderbird to open in your Inbox, you need to set the account to check for messages at startup.
- Go to Tools > Account Settings > [account name] > Server Settings.
- Check mark Check for new messages at startup.
By the way, could you please read Mozilla Support rules and guidelines? I've had to edit out the profanity and attacks in your earlier posts, thanks.
Apologies for the language but I take it personally when my computer is negatively affected by "Strongly suggested updates to protect my security." What a pants load. IF you people knew how to write code you would NOT have to deal with me. Think about that. EVERY post I have made is the result of negative effects from updates. EVERY ONE!! No thanks to you guys but I found and fixed my problem. And it was so much fun because I had absolutely nothing else more important to do. Please notice the sarcasm. BTW Check for new messages at startup has ALWAYS been checked. I assume the only time that setting will change is when some genius code writer works it into an update. Give me a freaking break! I use CCleaner after EVERY session on my computer to annihilate the immensely pleasurable cookies/telemetry/tracking BS that capitalist, fascist pigs use all day every day. I went into the settings for CCleaner, opened Applications, and unchecked the box for Session under Thunderbird. My new question is why can't you write updates that retain the current settings for the application????? I can't write code but I have taken a couple of college level programming classes and it shouldn't be that hard. 0=retain all settings; 1=reset all settings. Is it really that difficult?? I have a thousand things happen to me every day. I am NOT going to remember in 3-6 months when the new updates are out how I fixed the unnecessary problem that arose today caused by my ignorance in acquiescing and updating. UPDATES SHOULD NOT BE FEARED!!!! Like they say "It ain't rocket science." Every time I update now I fear it will screw something up on my computer. I know, if you don't like it don't use it. Thanks to you guys I am closer now than ever to just throwing the computer in the garbage and living off the grid. Firefox has been permanently screwed for me and now you are aiming at Thunderbird. The world is going to that really hot place in a hand basket.
Your egregiously written updates cost me 2 hours of my life and one nearly lethal dose of cortisol. Thanks for everything. You're the best!!!
The solution to this problem is NEVER update any software from Mozilla
Epiphany!!! You wrote the code so I couldn't clear the telemetry so Mozilla can track me. That is sick, sad, and disgusting.
Hi, From your wording, I get the impression that you think you are directly contacting developers or Mozilla employees. You are not. This is a community support forum. The people that answer questions here are users just like you, volunteering their time.
But that doesn't mean we can't try help you! ☺️ I have Thunderbird set to display the Inbox at startup, and that setting continued to work, when I updated to Thunderbird 60. If I understand correctly, you were able to fix it by disabling a setting in CCleaner, correct?
If you'd like to disable auto-updates, here's how:
- Press the Alt key to show the menu bar.
- Then go to Tools > Options.
- Open the Advanced panel.
- Select the Update tab.
- Set it to either Check for updates, but let me choose whether to install them or Never check for updates (not recommended: security risk)
I appreciate your input. And yes AGAIN I am an idiot. The only way to get an actual employee's attention in today's world is get on a plane, fly to their physical location, and then have some scam to bypass security. I am 58. I was quoted in a local rag recently when while lamenting the pathetic state of the union I said "I take great solace in the fact that I will be dead soon." That is me trying to present a positive attitude. I am OCD. I have been through every tab on every screen on every possible avenue in Thunderbird. I honestly believe that they did this intentionally. It didn't work this way BEFORE the update. I have the option of opening in a fashion that is physically/mentally/emotionally painful for me or allowing the wonderful and all knowing saints to track every @#$ing move I make. Quality of life is a big issue. This Big Brother BS is maddeningly intolerable
I appreciate your time and efforts
what type of information would be in the session files that CCleaner erases that they would be willing to slit your throat to obtain?
Hi, I don't know what CCleaner is specifically doing to your Thunderbird information. I think the folks at CCleaner would be able to answer your question. When I search for the CCleaner support address, I get the following: https://www.ccleaner.com/support
CCleaner shouldn't be allowed to touch Thunderbird. End of story.
I suggest you accept that updates are a necessary evil. You know every major software source offers automatic updates, for a variety of reasons, and Thunderbird is no different: bug fixes (OK, maybe not for you, but there are millions of users and someone else needs them), security fixes, supporting new hardware, supporting changed, updated and new OS, workarounds for OS problems, etc.
If we didn't supply updates then users would rightly complain. So between in choosing between users who complain about not updating vs users who complain about doing updates, we choose to favor the former.
