When I open the chat tab for my Twitter account upon opening Thunderbird, it connects briefly, then disconnects after a few minutes. It will then try to connect again, but usually only manages it for a few seconds. After several attempts, it finally can't connect at all. When I try to check the "show chat status," I get an "Error: 429 - {"errors":[{"message":"Rate limit exceeded", "code", 88}]}". It just started doing this a week or two ago. I only use it one or two days a week so I'm not sure what day it suddenly started. It worked fine before that since I set it up a couple of months ago. When I try to check the "chat status" under tools, it is greyed out so that I can't click on it.

I think that's all the relevant data... Any ideas of what's wrong? Aside from Thunderbird chat is trying to connect to Twitter too much after the initial connection problems? Thanks.

Chosen solution

Hi I've located some info on this. It would seem Twitter has done this deliberately and disabled the user streaming API. https://developer.twitter.com/en/docs/accounts-and-users/subscribe-account-activity/api-reference/user-stream

People are trying to come up with a workaround. see bug reports:

Cheers. Bug reports match with my experience. It's a shame as I was really enjoying that feature. Hope the coding gods are able to come up with a work around.
