How do I manually download emails? T'bird constantly freezes while automatically downloading messages

I think this is about how to change email downloads from auto to manual. Not sure, tho. I thought my IT guy had done already this. All I know is that every time emails download - EVERYTHING freezes. I cannot continue typing an email; I cannot scroll through my emails; I cannot delete an email; I cannot even click on an email to read it while waiting for other emails to download. I just have to sit and wait until the downloading is done. And because I get a lot of emails, this happens constantly. Quite frustrating and I hope someone can help me. Thank you!!
