Thunderbird will not open

My Thunderbird has suddenly stopped talking to my router. It was OK yesterday and Firefox is running perfectly. As Thunderbird will not open I cannot get to the Settings etc. The only thing I can think of is that yesterday we tried to install VMWareplayer. It didn't work so it was removed. Any ideas, please?

UPDATE I can now get TB to open but it is not receiving or sending emails, although all previous emails are still there presumably as they are on the laptop. Checking in Processes I found 2 entries for Thunderbird.exe*32 so I deleted them and TB opened. Only 1 process now shows for it in the list. The problem seems to be that TB is not talking to the router but Firefox is which seems very strange.
