Is it possible to stop Thunderbird checking for emails automatically?

I'm asking on behalf of a disabled user who sometimes finds it is stressful to find she has new emails to deal with.

In Account Settings there is the Server Settings tab. On that page, you can set the mail check interval. If you untick the option, then new mails will only be checked at the start of the session - if that option is still enabled. However if only the notifications are annoying, I'd suggest turning off those instead.
