Incoming emails have stopped appearing automatically in my inbox.
My incoming emails have stopped appearing automatically in my inbox. But if I click on another folder, then go back to inbox, there is the new message. This can happen with many messages, not just one. So unless I go through this action all the time, I can be unaware I have any new emails.
I have not consciously changed any settings.
Is there something I can check to put this back to normal?

Does it work better if you use the current beta version? https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/channel/
Thanks Matt. But I am a basic sort of user and don't want to branch out into a new version.
Could it be something to do with filters? I really don't know.
It could be to do with your idiot provider running a non standards compliant mail server. The beta version contains a fix that allows Thunderbird to work with the mail server. But your choice. Try the fixed version or put up with what you have
Matt, I cracked it, but I don't know how. I discovered, by chance, that the hidden emails were coming in at the bottom of the inbox, below the oldest emails, even though the display I have shows the most recent at the top. They were out of my sight. It seems that when I clicked on any other folder, that action made the hidden ones at the bottom jump to the top. I did not touch the date column header to make this happen.
Once I found them at the bottom, I then played with the date column, just toggling between newest and latest displays, and then sent some test emails again. And they have all, so far, come into the top of the list where they should be.
I just can't see how it kept up the inconsistency of holding a couple of new emails hidden at the bottom of the list, while all the other ones of recent days were at the top. Guess we'll never know.
So, it seems to be fixed, but don't ask me how!
Thanks for your suggestions though.
That's a common comment from users who don't like threads. New messages may be placed next to related messages and not at the top or bottom where you might expect new messages to be. And you can apply whatever sorting regime to each and any folder, so it's quite reasonable for some to be newest first and others to be oldest first.
I use View|Folders|Unread to spot unread messages wherever they may be. If they are in a conversation, they may well be buried in a collapsed tree. The usual hint that Thunderbird gives is to underline the top-level member of the tree if there are unread messages within.
The "Unread messages" filter in the QuickFilter bar will help further in showing you only unread messages in the current folder.
