When I go to my sent file it spins for minutes then when it stops all my emails from 3/2015 to current are gone Where?

My sent file from Mar, 2015 to current disappeared during the night. I went to Thunderbird this morning and went to check my sent folder and it just spun for a few minutes. When it stopped spinning a couple thousand of sent emails were missing. Can I get them back or are they gone?
