my gmail account keeps asking password and i have written server name 'mail.gmail.com'

I just did a search of my settings and none of them use the "mail.gmail.com" that you mention. 

INCOMING: account7, , (imap) imap.googlemail.com:993, SSL, passwordCleartext
OUTGOING: , smtp.googlemail.com:465, SSL, passwordCleartext, true
INCOMING: account35, , (imap) imap.gmail.com:993, SSL, OAuth2
OUTGOING: , smtp.gmail.com:465, SSL, OAuth2, true
INCOMING: account37, , (imap) imap.gmail.com:993, SSL, passwordCleartext
