slowed drastically in the past few weeks. (Linux Mint)

Question pretty much says it all. Character echo is very slow, several seconds. Same to changing mailboxes. Everything is slow. I first suspected exhausted memory from FireFox. Killing all browsers did not help. I'm unaware if some other system change precipitated the problem.

Tried safe mode? https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/safe-mode-thunderbird
