When I had Geek Squad copy files from my desktop computer the my new laptop computer, they told me that they couldn't touch anything involving email due to privacy concerns. How do I copy the address book from Thunderbird on my desktop computer to Thunderbird on my laptop computer? I already Thunderbird running on my laptop, there's just NOTHING in the address book

You export in from computer a and import it to computer b. Open address book window. Select Tools-Export Select LDIF as file type. Save file to memory stick. Move file to computer b and Import.

OMG what a bunch. Copying the store file does not represent a privacy issue any more than copying your word documents would be.

See if you can follow these instructions I wrote today. https://thunderbirdtweaks.blogspot.com.au/2018/02/copy-thunderbirds-profile-to-new.html

Personally I am against trying to get bits of the profile, it usually ends in tears as something is lost, be is calendar, message notes or something else.

The reply from AIRMAIL just re-stated my problem. It didn't do ANYTHING AT ALL to tell me just exactly HOW to do it.

Matt's response was much more helpful. But it still didn't get the job done. At 1 point, he referred to entering %apdata%. This step didn't work--I got a "FILE NOT FOUND" message-or something like that.

Also, I don't want to copy my entire data file. I ONLY want to move my address book. All of the old emails can stay behind.

What I really need is the "Thunderbird for Dummies" version. The version called "Thunderbird for TOTALLY CLUELESS Dummies" would be even better.

My old computer is about 8-10 years old running Windows Vista, service pack 2, whatever that means.

Then I am not sure what you are looking for. Not sure how hard it is to open the address book, click Tools-Export and follow simple instructions.

Thanks Airmail, I think it is time for coffee.

@Cwilkie It is time to put down the cudgels. You have been given step by step instructions.

  1. Open address book window.
  2. Select Tools-Export Select LDIF as file type.
  3. Save file to memory stick.
  4. Move file to computer b and Import.

I will add that importing is as simple as opening a file.

You have made no attempt to tell anyone why you think those instructions are incomplete. They are simple and concise in my view.

With Regard to the information I provided the string is %appdata% that you mistyped it here only leaves me to think you mistyped it when it did not work. %appdata% is a global variable that ALL copies of windows know and respond to. I am not sure how far back it goes, but it certainly works in XP.

As you may now be aware ad-hominem attacks will not be tolerated in this forum. As I typed this message I notice someone has locked the thread, I assume because of your ad-hominem attacks.

You are welcome to ask a further question, but I strongly suggest you try the steps offered in Airmails first response to you where he provided step by step actions, which I have placed numbers beside in this post.
