Why doesn't Thunderbird automatically correct punctuation (especially apostrophies) when typing emails?

When I type emails and miss a punctuation mark like apostropies there is never auto correct or even a recommended correction in auto check. Very inconvenient!

You could try this add-on:

I found it annoying rather than helpful.
