After an update the text formatting toolbar went missing. Re-installation of Thunderbird did not solve the problem.

You change your Account Settings to compose in HTML. Account Settings-Composition and Addressing

This is a per account setting. if you have more than one account in Thunderbird you must change each one you want to compose in HTML.

The format bar only shows when composing in HTML. If using plain text there is no need for that toolbar. If you hold the shift key when opening a Write window is the format toolbar there?

Reinstalling Thunderbird is a waste of time. Your data and settings are separate from the program and a new install picks up the old settings.

Thank you, this solves the problem on a case by case basis. How to include the formatting bar as a default?
