Some time after a file compaction yesterday, I noticed that two of my folders appeared empty, though their Properties indicated that they were not. Tried Repair Folder with no success then looked online in Mozilla help. Followed various suggestions, finishing with rebuilding the global database - still no good, though the messages were still there (as indicated by Properties and revealed by Notepad). Finally dragged the folders to another of my accounts to make a copy of them and all messages now visible in their new location.

Chosen solution

Having searched for a message in one of the folders - and found it - I thought to look through the main menu options and discovered that both folders were set to view unread messages only: silly me! How they got that setting I cannot say.

It sounds like you had an invisible 'Message List'. If folder says it has a size and a 'Folder repair' to refresh the index does not work, you would do this as a test. Make sure 'Message Pane' is enabled. Click in the 'empty' message list where you would expect to see list of emails and if an email suddenly appeared in 'Message Pane' then you had an invisible 'Message List'. You would do this to refresh that list and make all visible again:

Click on far right column header choice icon and select 'Reset columns to default' option which is near the bottom. See image as guide.

No luck with your suggestion. I could send one of the folders and its msf file (about 4Mbytes zipped). I copied them into another account (using file manager) and the messages remained invisible
