When you update Thunderbird you delete my Saved Folder why?
You just updated my Thunderbird and my Saved Folder disappeared and this is the second time please don't do that!
Chosen solution
You are talking to fellow users offering their free time to help a fellow user and not developers. We do not fix code, we did not update your computer, but we can help to find out what was going on and in many cases provide info on how to prevent it from reoccuring. To do that, information is required to understand your setup, that's why we ask questions.
I asked twice for you to supply specific information to find out what was happening in your profile folders. Zenos and Matt also pointed this out. You have still not answered those questions.
re: My anti virus would likely take out an email but not a whole folder! Unfortunately, that theory is wrong. When you see a 'folder' in your Folder Pane eg: 'Saved' in Local Folders, that is actually an mbox text file stored in the profile folders. Emails are written to an mbox file, one after the other in the order downloaded or saved. So it looks like one long document and each email is like a new paragraph. If AV is scanning Thunderbird files on startup and locates something it does not like in that file, then the whole file can be effected. This often shows an indexing file unaffected but the mbox file gone. Providing the information would have shown this, if it was the case.
I was also trying to find out if you had more than one 'Local Folders' mail account. Perhaps, the first one could not be located for some unknown reason and a second was created - maybe that first one still exists. This info would have been provided to all those who were trying to help you, if you had answered questions. I also wanted to find out what 'Local directory' was being used for Local folders as this may also have given clues as to what may have occurred.
Please assume that if fellow users of thunderbird ask for information, then it is because it is needed in order to help you.

what is a saved folder and where is it located?
Please provide us with a screenshot. If you need help to create a screenshot, please see How do I create a screenshot of my problem?
Once you've done this, attach the saved screenshot file to your forum post by clicking the Browse... button below the Post your reply box. This will help us to visualize the problem.
Thank you!
Hi Matt,
Thank you for being here! In Thunderbird we create a Saved folder in the Local Folders area and when Thunderbird is automatic updated our Saved Folder disappears. We would rather that didn't happen! When I tried to take a Firefox Screenshot nothing happened.
Damn, I will have to stop using their articles.... that stood no chance of working.
in the windows search bar type snip Open the snipping tool. Click new on the snipping tools toolbar (the whole screen will get a "not available" sort of translucence) Click in the screen and Drag a rectangle over the part of the screen you want to include in your screen shot. Use the snipping tool to save the image as a png file. Upload the PNG file using the browse button under a reply on the forum.
We just went to Windows Accessories and Opened the Snipping Tool why didn't you say that to begin with? See the Saved Folder in Local Folders it disappears when you auto upgrade our Thunderbird!
Please provide some info If folders are missing after upgrade, please check you have this setting: Via 'Menu Bar' toolbar: 'View' > 'Folders' > 'All or Via 'Mail Toolbar' toolbar: 'Menu icon' > 'Folders' > 'All'
Q: Was it only the 'Saved' folder missing or did you lose 'Local Folders' mail account as well? Q: Please tell us how you got the 'Saved' folder to reappear. Q: Have you lost any emails in 'Saved' folder?
- Right click on 'Local Folders' mail account and select 'Settings'
'Account Settings' window opens. On the right side it will say 'Local directory:'
- click in the text area and using the right arrow key, go all the way to the far right. Some text will be hidden so keep going until you cannot go any further.
- Left click and hold down and drag all the way back to the left to highlight.
- Right click on highlighted text and select 'Copy'
- In this forum question, right click in a 'Post a Reply' text box and select 'Paste'.
Make hidden files and folders visible:
In Thunderbird
- Help > Troubleshooting Information
- click on 'Open Folder' button
A window opens showing the contents of your 'profile name' folder.
- Click on 'Mail' folder
This will show you 'Local Folders' folder. Q: Is there only one 'Local Folders' folder or is there more but with a number after it?
- click on 'Local Folders' folder.
Make sure can see these column headers: Name, Date modified, Type, Size.
- Post an image showing contents of 'Local Folder'
If there are two 'Local Folders' please repeat the above and show contents of other 'Local Folder'
Only the Saved Folder that we add to Local Folders gets lost and No it did not get left in the Trash! It is up to guys to Fix It so when you upgrade Thunderbird it does not delete Folders we add ourselves!
There could be several reasons why something is not where you expect it. I'm not going to guess, so it would be appreciated if you could supply answers to queries. In addition to supplying all the information requested in my previous comment, which you have not answered anything as yet........... Please also tell us the following: Q: Do you have any AV product scanning Thunderbird folders and files on startup? If yes, does the AV auto fix or does it ask what to do?
No I don't have an AV auto fixing anything ugh! You guys are making me want to Stop using Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird the creators are not very BRIGHT! We DAMN SURE DON'T LIKE THE TONE OF YOUR LAST EMAIL MR TOAD BA! DON'T TALK DOWN TO PEOPLE!
Modified
It would seem for some completely unknown reason, you do not want to supply certain requested information. This is regrettable and does not help your situation.
All people wishing to try to help you do so in unpaid and volunatry capacity. No one has to respond. Do not use capial letters as it is deemed as shouting and against the rules of this forum and it does you no favours.
If you do not wish to cooperate in an attempt to resolve your issue then I will just have to accept your decision.
I am cooperating it is your deficiency that you can't see that! Your asking me to do stuff that is irrelevant! Your trying to use a bunch of Geek talk that your not doing a very good job! Talk to me in NON GEEK Talk and ask me to do relevant stuff and we might get somewhere! Simple Simple simple I add a Saved Folder to Local Folders and the last two times you update Thunderbird the Saved Folder I add to Local Folders is GONE! My Windows AV has not found any problems with my PC that needed fixing any time recently! I Looked in your Thunderbird trash as you ask I made you a Snap Shot like you asked I gave you report on my Av how am I not cooperating!
"You're asking me to do stuff that is irrelevant! "
Do you know what's wrong? No. Neither do we. So how can you know which questions are irrelevant?
Please answer the questions.
I am answering your questions and you are talking down to me again!
When you upgrade Thunderbird last two times my Saved Folder in Local Folder disappeared!
Why is there any questions that need answered?
What questions haven't I answered?
Perhaps you need to look at this slightly differently. I gave instructions to you to find the snipping tools. What did I get, a mouthful about how my instructions were deficient for your needs because I did not tell you to use the Start menu. (obviously never used Windows 8 which does not have one)
Then your complain about being talk down to. I stopped participating because I just do not need attitude.
So lets start this again. IF you do not understand say so. It is not up to others to guess what you know, do not know or understand.
So as you complain about geek talk. Do you have an anti virus? What is it?
I see no inbox on local folders. Thunderbird always has one of those unless someone deletes it. Did you?

Actually the software is installed on your computer, running with your other choices of software. We are trying desperately to get you to do enough that we might work out what did or did not occur. Instead you think someone is going to fix it for you. That is not going to happen.
Please add the troubleshooting information to your post To find the Troubleshooting information:
- Open Help (or click on three-line-icon and select Help)
- Choose Troubleshooting Information
- Use the button Copy to clipboard to select all. Do not check box "Include account names"!
- Paste this in your post.
Never seen an Inbox in local folders certainly never deleted myself.
I have less time for attitudes than you do YOU GOT ONE TO GET OVER TO!
You people don't want fess up to a mistake in your program so your trying to put it off on us!

So it happened... you are asking us why and we are vainly trying to understand what could have happened. The reality is we should give up. You have obliviously recreated the missing folder so whatever traces there were to find about what occurred are not going to be there now.
As for blaming the user, take it however you like. My Thunderbird has never lost a folder in 10 years. Yours has lost one twice. For a folder to truly go missing there is a file named "saved" that must disappear from your hard disk. Was it truly gone? I do not know.
Back here Toad asked you to provide information from the file system. You never responded with the information. So was there a problem with Thunderbird not "noticing" the already existing file. No idea. Are there two or three files there now? I doubt it but you never looked. Perhaps that is why Zenos and Toad are asking you to answer the questions.
So to your original statement.that the update removed a file from your hard disk. Not a very likely occurrence given the update is in program files and the profile is somewhere completely different in application data. But the evidence of your eyes must be believed that that was when the file went missing, or at least when it was observed to be missing.
Be far the most common reason for Thunderbird file to go missing is anti virus products automatically fixing detected threats. Following an updates all of the files in the profile probably get touched on to verify the installation, accessing a file prompts a scan from the anti virus. It says it finds something and would you like it to fix things. You say yes and it deletes the file. In the case of Thunderbird that is usually the entire inbox, or whatever folder of mail he "threat" was found.
I asked about your inbox to local folders as the missing inbox may be indicative of hard disk errors. I suggest you check the hard disk for physical errors The windows disk defragmenter will kick off that sort of check.
Thunderbird has a cache of folder names Like all caches it can be corrupted and removing the xulstore.json file helps in that sorts of circumstances by forcing the recreation of the file and a disk scan to do so.

To run this forum as a mailing list would see everyone spammed by Thousands of emails from everyone else that has aproblem. I get plenty as it is. I do not want more.
Having a forum allows everyone to read and chip in what they know. email assumes some sort of ownership of a problem and a guarantee that the individual will be available. I sometime here 3 or 4 days in a row and missing for 14. Would you like to wait while I, or someone else, go off and earn a living.
I have used Thunderbird for years as well and this is the first time files went missing immediately when the update is done!
Saved Folder goes missing immediately I check in Revo~Uninstaller and sure enough there is brand new copy of Thunderbird!
I searched this PC over thoroughly for the missing Saved Folder but it was nowhere to be found before I ever wrote you to begin with!
My anti-virus has not fixed or made any adjustment to this computer for long time!
My anti virus would likely take out an email but not a whole folder!
I just wrote you to begin with to say you guys got a problem I did not ask for help or believe there was anything wrong on my end that I need your help with!
As far as I am concerned this matter is closed! If you Gals and guys don't want to fix your end that is your business!
