Starting a few days ago I cannot send emails via Thunderbird but I can receive emails. If I go to the Windstream site I can both send and receive emails so I suspect my Thunderbird settings might be wrong. Error message when sending via Thunderbird is that the SMTP outgoing server timed out. Windstream support says to use IMAP for Server Setting and SMTP for outgoing server - and they stated that Thunderbird would handle port assignment and security type. I've tried several different combinations and permutations but none worked - get same error message (no error code listed). I'm using Windows 7 - 64 bit and Thunderbird 52.3.0 - 32 bit. Any help would be much appreciated.

Providers setup their servers. If they do not know what settings to use, find a reliable provider.

Thanks for responding. I guess I should mention that we only have one choice for a provider out here in the backwoods. Well, there is one other option - fiber optics but I'd have to sell the house to be able to afford it.

I checked out the link provided by Onno but it refers to web hosting settings. I just have plain old email - no web site.

I am finding some similar issues posted here but so far no solution. This area did experience a power outage due to recent snowstorm and I had to reset the router but I can't find any router settings that might be causing the issue. Next up I'll try bypassing router and see what happens. Be back later.

I bypassed the router but the problem persists. I also started Thunderbird with add-ons disabled but again no luck. Thanks again for the responses. It was good of you to take the time. I'll keep plugging away and if I find a solution I'll post it here.

There are others that reported problems with Windstream lately, so it might be a problem on their side.

Problem Solved

I did a clean re-install of Thunderbird (52.5.0) (32bit) and then when adding email addresses I just let TB do it's thing and assign port, security level, etc. The settings worked and are given below. As I was testing things I also discovered that one of my Windstream passwords was too long even though it had worked in the past.

Many thanks for the suggestions and I hope this might help someone who faces a similar issue even though a re-install is no fun.

Settings that worked for me are:

Server Type: Pop Mail Server Server Name: pop.windstream.net Port 110 Default 110 User Name: Your name - first part of email address before "."

Connection Security: STARTTLS Authentication Method: Normal Password

SMTP Settings:

Description: blank in my case Server Name: smtp.windstream.net Port: 25 Default 587 Connection Security: STARTTLS Authentication Method: Normal Password

User name: Same as above.

Note: not sure why outgoing SMTP port was set at 25 while default is listed as 587. I didn't change anything. Also I noticed that web addresses in this reply are automatically converted to links. I don't know how to change that.
