Every other startup, Firefox loses saved tabs and reverts settings - how do I fix this?
I'm running Firefox 57.0.1 on a Macbook Pro with latest OS (High Sierra). When I installed Firefox I set the preferences to open with the same tabs from the previous session. I installed some basic add-ons (nothing weird or from sites I don't trust or haven't used before). When I restarted, Firefox showed a blank tab instead of my tabs from before. I checked preferences and it showed that I had selected "show your windows and tabs from last time." So, I tried again with the same results. Even though the correct preference was set, it kept failing to actually apply the setting.
So, after reading tons of things, I tried refreshing Firefox - no effect. I looked for a users.js file - don't have one. Tried to erase and invalidpref.js files - none there.
I opened prefs.js and saw that the startup state was 1, so I tried changing that to 3. That worked at first. I quit Firefox and restarted it. My tabs were there. I quit Firefox again and restarted, and they were gone. The setting in Preferences never showed any change (and neither did the prefs.js file), but Firefox consistently loses my tabs on the second restart and doesn't work properly again until I try and create a new prefs.js file).
I've also tried looking at about:config, but I'm not sure what to change there. So far nothing has worked.
I've also made sure that I have Firefox set to "Remember History." Tracking protection is only active in Private Windows
I'm stumped. Why won't Firefox remember that I want my tabs saved?
For the record, I have 2 profiles, and I'm having this issue with both of them. I'd love some help here.

If you use the close X on Mac then you only close this window, but the Firefox application is still running (see History -> Recently Closed Tabs/Windows). If you then quit Firefox with all windows closed then you can't reopen tabs automatically because there is no session active. On Mac you always need to use "Firefox > Quit" if you want to reopen tabs and windows.

Separate Security Issue: Update your Flash Player Note: Windows users should download the ActiveX for Internet Explorer. and the plugin for Plugin-based browsers (like Firefox).
Note: Windows 8 and Windows 10 have built-in flash players and Adobe will cause a conflict. Install the plugin only. Not the ActiveX.

FredMcD - thanks, but unfortunately none of your responses helps me:
I already read the article, but I don't run Advanced SystemCare with Surfing Protection.
Also, I'm not using a Windows machine, so the flash update info you posted doesn't apply.
I already have the most recent Firefox version. Were you saying to delete the other profiles and see if that's the problem? Thanks!
Any other ideas?

The Windows information is for those that use Windows. Your Flash is outdated and should be updated or removed.
I already have the most recent Firefox version.

That is just an example. Other programs can also lock the profiles.
Were you saying to delete the other profiles and see if that's the problem?
Other profiles would only be a problem if you were switching between them.
Did you check if you can restore previous session?
- History -> Restore Previous Session
In case you use "Clear history when Firefox closes" or otherwise clear history.
- do not clear the Browsing History
- Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security -> Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history": [X] "Clear history when Firefox closes" -> Settings
- https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/delete-browsing-search-download-history-firefox
- clearing "Site Preferences" clears exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, and software installation and exception for password and other website specific data
- clearing "Cookies" will remove all selected cookies including cookies with an "Allow" exception you may want to keep
Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
- switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
- do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window
- https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode
- https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-extensions-themes-to-fix-problems
You can check for problems with preferences.
Delete possible user.js and numbered prefs-##.js files and rename/remove the prefs.js file to reset all prefs to the default value including prefs set via user.js and prefs that are no longer supported in current Firefox releases.
You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

Hi Cor-el,
Thanks for the ideas. Here's what I've tried:
I don't have a user.js in any of the folders accessible in Profiles or Troubleshooting. Maybe that's the problem? I do have a "signedinuser.js" file - could that be it?
I have tried deleting and also rename the prefs.js file. That didn't help.
I've disabled all add-ons and started in safe mode - same problem persisted. I am currently running no extensions and default theme.
I CAN go to History > Restore Windows and my previous window with tabs is there. But they still won't appear on startup.
I don't clear the history on exit or use custom settings for history. I did for testing purposes clear all history and cookies, but that didn't help.
Temporarily I can use the Restore Windows under history, but I just don't understand why it won't work on startup.
Thanks!

My Firefox says it's up-to-date at 57.0.1 and won't update. I can't find a different way to update. Do you know how?
I updated flash (and restarted the laptop), but the problem persists.
When I inspect the folder and files within the folder, they all are unlocked. To my knowledge I don't have any programs that would lock them.
I'm running MalwareBytes and will update when it finishes, but it's not that my homepage is being redirected. Firefox will open a single page that I put into the address bar (like gmail). It just won't open the most recent session with multiple tabs.
I'll update with Malware scan in a bit.

If the startup pref changes without actions taken by you then you probably have some software running on your computer.
Try to create a new profile to test if your current profile is causing the problem.
See "Creating a profile":
- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Profile_issues
If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.
Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support to see if that has effect in case other (security) software is causing problems.
Cor-el,
I created a new profile. Same problem.
HOWEVER, here's something I noticed: If I click the red button to close the window and it warns me that I'm going to close the tabs, then it seems that it's wiping those tabs from memory. If I just quit Firefox from the File menu or with the shortcut (command-Q), then the tabs show up when I open the program again.
So, it seems like there's a problem (maybe specific to Macs) where if I use the red browser button to close the window and I get the warning that I'm going to close tabs, then the tabs are deleted and when I restart Firefox I get a blank page.
BUT, if I just command-Q or use Firefox > Quit, I do NOT get the warning and when I restart Firefox I get my tabs back.
This is really odd behavior, but since it's not happening to you on Windows, I'm thinking this may be a Mac-related bug. Now that I see that I can just use the command to quit the browser and preserve my session, I can do that. However, I do think it might be helpful for programmers to see if they can recreate this.
I suppose there's an outside chance that I just have a weird computer, but I wonder if this is an issue with out Firefox users on Macs.
(Also note, MalwareBytes found no infections, but I'm running it again, just in case).
