Thunderbird Beachballs on Mac from start up

Thunderbird continues to freeze up and stop responding. I force quit, restart and it immediately beachballs. tried safe mode, same result. This is getting very frustrating. How do I fix this to run reliably?

It starts fine but seems to jump to checking messages and that is where the beachballing starts. How do I fix this without delete and reinstall?

YES and it's the same result. even if the internet is offline.
