I was using Edge for a while as Firefox was running so slow, but now Firefox has upgraded I thought I'd try it again as Edge is rubbish. I did a clean reinstall and when I try to open it, it looks like it is about to open and then does nothing. I have had this problem with Chrome previously and changed the name of the exe file by one letter and the shortcut and it then opened. This works too for Firefox, but then I can't set it as the default browser as it no longer lists it as an app. There is obviously something, probably in the windows 10 set-up somewhere, that is blocking the file firefox.exe but I have no idea how to solve it. I allowed all the security things when I installed it. I have also been into windows defender and tried to set the app as an exception, which it said it already was. I have tried to open it as an administrator to no avail. I've looked through a lot of help threads and not found the answer, although I think I have found people with a similar problem that has not been fixed. Any ideas anyone? I'm medium computer literate but might need guidance on anything too techy. Thanks in advance!

Nothing to do with Windows unless maybe silly security stuff

Please uninstall Firefox. Then Delete the Mozilla Firefox Folders in C:\Program Files and C:\Program Files(x86) Then restart system. Then run Windows Disk Cleanup. Then run it again and click the button that says Cleanup System Files. Note: your Firefox Profile is saved. But you should make a back up before you do : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/back-and-restore-information-firefox-profiles

Reinstall with Current Release Firefox 57.0 with a Full Version Installer https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

Thank you for your response. I have done all that and still can not open Firefox. I didn't find any relevant files in the Program Files(x86) folder, but did in C:\Program Files. Other users on this PC are able to use Firefox with no problems, so it is just my settings I've bodged somehow.

Some problems occur when your Internet security program was set to trust the previous version of Firefox, but no longer recognizes your updated version as trusted. Now how to fix the problem: To allow Firefox to connect to the Internet again;

  • Make sure your Internet security software is up-to-date (i.e. you are running the latest version).
  • Remove Firefox from your program's list of trusted or recognized programs. For detailed instructions, see

Configure firewalls so that Firefox can access the Internet. {web link}

Thank you. Well not a completely satisfactory solution, but I tried most things yesterday and in the end found a windows update lying in wait, which I did (a major one from the looks of it) and it fixed the problem!! Now, just got to persuade it to remember the driver for the monitors and we're good. Thanks for the help. Em
