zip downloads dont unzip with out winzip which is a pay version. Why is this?
Prior to the Quantum version i could just double click or chose extract all for zip files but with quantum it is using winzip which is a pay programme which i do not want. Any advice please.

Firefox uses what it finds on your system. It has found Winzip on it. If you did not expect that then should go to add/remove Programs and uninstall it. If it is not found then Firefox is finding left overs or a partial install of it.
Copy/Paste about:preferences into the Address Bar then Enter, please. Go down the page till you find Applications. Zip is at the bottom of that list. Click it and change to All-way's ask or Use Other Program and find the other program. In this case I am thinking you want Always Ask. Note when a File starts Downloading or when it comes in it will then ask what you want to do with it and will have to Click Save.
