Hopefully this is enough information to help solve this Firefox issue and thank you for your help with this.

Chosen solution
Try to create a new profile to test if your current profile is causing the problem.
See "Creating a profile":
- https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles
- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Profile_issues
If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.

The crash report shows problems with
avcuf32.dll = BitDefender
Kernel32.dll = Microsoft
KERNELBASE.dll = Microsoft
ntdll.dll = Microsoft
Update BitDefender. If the problem continues, disable it.
Perform a System File Check to fix corrupted system files

FredMcD and cor-el;
Thank you both for your replies to my post and your suggestions.
Fred; I did the update and file fix, but it do not solve the problem. However, I did learn something new about the file fix option - thanks again.
cor-el; I created a new profile and "voila" it worked without hanging up on the close. After much reading (there is a lot) I transferred only the necessary files from the corrupt profile and so far all is working well. Thank you very much for your help.
