After closing Thunderbird and then opening the Portable Apps Thunderbird (or vice versa) my computer freezes permanently and has to be restarted

As above, I get a blue screen of death on Windows 10 Pro if I open Thunderbird, then close it, and then open the Portable Apps version of Thunderbird. It happens the other way around as well. The BSOD mentions something to do with a Cache Manager, so I suppose the problem lies therein.

Ideally, I would like to be able to run both, as I keep separate email accounts in each version, but I'd happily settle for being able to run one then the other without crashing the computer and having to restart it. Are either or both of these hoped for outcomes possible?

Windows 10 version = 1703 (OS Build 15063.632) Portable Apps Thunderbird Version = 52.3.0 (32 bit) - though all the computers I have run 64 but... presumable there's no 64 bit version for Portable Apps? Standard Thunderbird version = I will crash my computer to get this... brb

Many thanks in advance,

Harry

Standard Thunderbird version appears to be the same as the portable version.

If I haven't yet run standard Thunderbird, I can run portable Thunderbird without crashing the computer, but as soon as I've run the standard version, I won't be able to run the portable version without going to BSOD and or restarting.

If I run portable version, but then close it down and completely exit out of Portable Apps, I can then run standard version without crashing, but if I leave portable apps running in the background (with portable version exited) and try to run standard version, the computer crashes.

Any help will be much appreciated.

use multiple profiles instead of multiple versions of Thunderbird would be my advice. Clearly the issue is in the portable app software, as it has to be running for you to have an issue. So you could ask them. But I still suggest multiple profiles.

This add-on makes is a fairly simple process once you have the add-on installed in all profiles. and all the profiles are registered in the profile manager https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/profileswitcher/

Thanks for your reply, but that add-on is no longer supported in Thunderbird. Irrespective of that, I need to run certain email accounts on the Portable Apps version, and others on my PC.

Then I suggest you talk the the portable apps people about why their product is causing crashes. https://portableapps.com/support

The portable version isn't the problem as far as I can see - if I run the portable version first and then run the standard version after closing the protable version down, I have no problems.

The problem occurs when the standard version is used and then the portable version is used. The standard version is leaving something behind / not closing down some element of itself that is then interfering with the portable version.
