When I move in the message list, the highlighted message used to appear in the window below the message list window.below.
Now I have to open the highlighted message to see it. I liked it better when I could see a portion of each highlighted message in the window below the message list.
Chosen solution
You can Open an email displayed in the Message List with a single left click and read it in the 'Message Pane'. The Message Pane usually provides scroll bars to view the entire message if it exceeds the space you have allowed or can use.
The 'Message Pane' is usually positioned below the Message List if you using the 'classic view' layout.
Check: Have you got the Message Pane enabled?
Either:
Toggle the view using F8 key
OR
'Menu icon' > 'Options' > 'Layout' > select 'Message Pane'.

re :Now I have to open the highlighted message to see it.
You have to open it, to read it in the Message Pane or a new tab or a window. So I presume you mean, you have to double click on email in message list to open in a new tab in order to read it.
Please note the Message Pane view is not a preview. Thunderbird offers different ways to open the email and read it.
Please confirm if you needed to enable the Message Pane.
