my folder pane has disappeared

When I open Thunderbird, I can only see the list of messages received for one of my accounts with no folder pane to the left. It was working ok until I had several windows open at once - different folders in different accounts/ messages being written - and closed the inbox window. If I go to View-folders, "all" is selected.

Try View|Layout and check "Folder Pane".
