I have Thunderbird deployed to about 40 users in an office environment. Normally everything works just fine, and when it doesn't it's usually some one-off issue that I can fix or work around.

Not this time. I have 3 (important) users now who have this problem, and they are losing patience with me and Thunderbird. If I can't fix it soon I will need to put them back on Outlook.

The issue is that every now and then they open Thunderbird and it acts as if it's the first time being opened after plugging in account info. All the folders pop-up down the left side (as if it's just finding them for the first time) and ALL of their email is re-downloaded.

We all have a ton of email, so this is bogging down their machines and our network. I would really appreciate some help.

I haven't tried it myself, because I can't reproduce the problem.

There is a problem in 52.2.0. Until the problem gets fixed, please reinstall https://releases.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/52.1.1/win32/en-US/

Are they are using oauth to login their accounts?

Yes, is there a chance changing it to "Normal Password" will fix this or is rolling back to the previous version the only remedy?

Ok I set them to "Normal Password". I don't have a way to reliably replicate the problem on-demand, so I won't really know if it worked until a few days go by without incident.

I'll report back either way.

Did you have good results with that change?

52.2.1 is coming out very soon to fix this.

Yeah changing to Normal Password seems to fix the problem.
