I bought a new computer installed windows 10. Firefox downloaded OK. When I installed Thunderbird v51.1.1 it already had my email address. My email server details were not correct, I have tried to amend them but can't. How can I completely remove Thunderbird along with all it's settings and profiles and start over again. I have uninstalled TD now 3 times with no success.

I have tried the usual Uninstall programs and looked for hidden files but it has not worked.

And don't worry too much about these folder names. They are internal labels that allow Thunderbird to uniquely associate accounts with the folders that hold their data. They are not necessarily the actual working server names.

How about just adding the account again?

What went wrong with "amending" the existing server settings? ("amending" is always a bad idea if it can possibly be avoided. ;-) )

You seem to be aware of the profile. Help|Troubleshooting Information will take you to it. Then you can close Thunderbird, navigate up to the "Thunderbird" folder, delete it and start over.

I'd always view wiping a profile as a desperate last resort. So much in it (address books, stored messages, folder structure, filters, junk training) that is valuable and painful to replace.

Hi Zenos. Thank for your prompt reply.

I understand what you are saying and agree.

Doing a clean install of Thunderbird for me is not a problem, I replaced a Desk Top two years ago and did a new install of TB with the data from the old desktop using W7, It took about one hour. This time it's a new Lap top and i am upgrading to W 10. I use Allway Sync to to keep the Desk Top and my Lap Top updated with each other so it is Imperative the data is identical. Why can't I erase the profile when uninstalling TB?. This is my problem. Regards Mike

It's just a folder. The design assumes that the data in it is precious and so it shouldn't be easy to accidentally delete the profile. And deliberately it is left in place when uninstalling the program itself.

Close Thunderbird. Go to …\Users\<you>\AppData\Roaming\ and your current profile(s) is/are stored under Thunderbird. Delete, move or rename that folder and you'll have a clean start. You will need to enable viewing of hidden files to work with it.

Hi Zenos, Again thank you for you reply.

It is evening here in the Far East and I have shut down my study for the evening. I will follow your instructions in the morning and let you know how I progress. Fingers crossed for a solution. Thanks again Regards Mike

Hi Zenos. I followed your instructions but could not locate the correct file. I have again downloaded TH 51.1.1 and opened Account Settings and copied every detail to my lap top.

Server settings. The file name is: C:\Users\MIKEMORETON HPLAPTOP\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\fzy0ciwb.default\Mail\pop3.loxinfo.co.th. Where is says Profiles\fzy0ciwb.default\Mail\pop3.loxinfo.co.th. It Should read Mail\udon.loxinfo.co.th The only difference I can see is the pop3 text. I have tried to change it but could not. I have very limited IT knowledge>

I can receive email but can't send email. The Error message says: Sending of the message failed. The message could not be sent because connecting to Outgoing server (SMTP) smtp.3bbmail.com failed. The server may be unavailable or is refusing SMTP connections. Please verify that your Outgoing server (SMTP) settings are correct and try again. The server is working ok, I can send and receive on my Desk Top. Any advice will be appreciated. Regards Mike

You were asking how to delete the profile, but you have dived too deep right inside it.

I'd go here:

C:\Users\MIKEMORETON HPLAPTOP\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\

and delete (or rename) that Thunderbird folder.

Then Thunderbird will come up with a clean start (and re-create this folder, putting a new empty profile into it.)

Does your sync backup program include these files? Replacing the Thunderbird folder here with the matching one from the backup should put you back into business, assuming it is a copy of a working profile.

Incidentally, did you notice that Microsoft themselves have stopped using some pathnames with spaces? "Documents and Settings" became "Users", "Application Data" became "AppData". (I'm quite surprised they kept "Program Files").

I'd want to remove the space in your user folder name here. Having to wrap pathnames in quote marks to ensure they are processed properly is just an unnecessary complication.

Hi Zenos, Thanks for your very prompt reply. As I mentioned my knowledge of IT is limited. I did not understand your second reply today. I will let you know how I get on.

Hi Zenos, Finally found the Thunderbird Profile and deleted it.

Have now done a clean install, All is well but I cant send email. The SMPT server setting should be Port 25 but defaults to 587 which I don't know how to change. I have tried the edit option in Outgoing Server SMPT Settings but it does not work. Any ideas? I have double checked all of the other settings and all are OK.

Regards Mike
