Cannot get into email account. Problem just started. Message is that app may put account at risk--less secure app
Google is preventing me from getting into my gmail account because Thunderbird is not secure. Please fix this un Thunderbird. See attached file.
Chosen solution
the error dialog offers a link to google to allow less secure apps. click it and allow them. This setting on google is automatically turned on everytime you go through their account security wizard thing. A bit sneaky really but it does put money in their pockets from search if you are using their web site instead of Thunderbird.
It is also fairly obvious that you are getting email from this forum in Thunderbird. SO is it possible your issues are related to one of your add-ons?

Please post your Troubleshooting Information.
At the top right of the Thunderbird window, click the menu button , then select Help > Troubleshooting Information.
Press the "Copy text to clipboard button" and paste the information into your reply.
what are you talking about? I bring up Tbird and I get the message from google seen in the previously attached file. That I am stopped from my gmail account because the app (Tbird) is not secure. I get a message from Tbird asking for my gmail account pw. I enter it and get "Login to server imap.gmail.com failed." That's it. I have made no changes -- I am just now having this problem.
Forgot to say that I have no problem logging into my gmail account from FF. The problem is Tbird.
Try reading the instructions given. That is what he is talking about.
thank you for explaining. So helpful. How about you tell me what Thunderbird window? Give me the url. Or some description of what you mean by Thunderbird window.
Thunderbird. You know the Thunderbird software you seem to be asking questions about. It is not that hard. Open Thunderbird. Click the 3 bar menu icon pictures in the instructions.
FYI: There are no URLs in email.
Ran from file location and got the attached. Same thing I get when I run from shortcut.
Please point out the 3 bar menu icon.
You cut off the AppMenu button. 3 bar. But the Help Menu is clearly visible. Try clicking that and selecting Troubleshooting Info. Then try to follow the instruction posted above.

This doesn't make sense to me. OAuth2 authentication is turned on for both, incoming , and outgoing (Gmail) servers. In that case one doesn't have to 'allow less secure apps'.

As far as I am aware, Google will not use oAuth2.0 for POP accounts, only IMAP and SMTP.

That's my understanding too. And I didn't see any Gmail POP account in the Troubleshooting Information.
