In the top level directory you have the two executables 'firefox' and 'firefox-bin'. What is the difference between them?

They have slightly different file lengths.
ls -la !$
ls -la /home/firefox/firefox* -rwxr-xr-x 1 stephen stephen 139152 May 24 03:56 /home/firefox/firefox -rwxr-xr-x 1 stephen stephen 139160 May 24 03:56 /home/firefox/firefox-bin
