Any email I send in HTML is now delivered as html code.....this started within the last few days
If I send a message in HTML...as I have done for years....it now arrives in the form of HTML code
This is what "TEST" shows up like

I had not changed anything........ I have switched to plain text since this started but it's very limiting to me and up to now Thunderbird has been working perfectly

Which version of Thunderbird? What platform (windows/osx/linux)? What antivirus/firewall?
It is possible that security software is doing this.
I generally run beta test release candidates. I have used both 52 and 53 and I haven't ever seen it mangling html in the way you show here, so I don't really think anything has changed in Thunderbird itself.

Do you know if this change coincided with the upgrade to 52.0.1? Do you need to tell McAfee that you have a new version of Thunderbird? Or try disabling scanning of email, both inbound and outbound.
IF I try HTML it will sometimes come through sometimes not but now it's stripping any image I try to attached in the body of the message and that is one of the primary things I need to do when exchanging information with my contacts
I'm not sure how I would "tell" McAfee I have a new version of Thunderbird. I've been using it since win10 was released so it's worked fine through a number of upgrades. This problem just recently started and I have no idea if it's Thunderbirds update or something Microsoft slipped into my computer when I blinked on morning on start up.
All I know *for sure* is I had touched nothing until this started then I had to reset all of my email accounts to plain text ...I just today turned them back to HTML to see how things were working and that's when I discovered that even if I can get a message out and back to one of my other accounts a pasted in image is now being stripped away and I know for dead certain that was not happening a week ago
If you have McAfee in the Thunderbird 'Addon' Extensions then remove it. Stop McAfee scanning emails, both incoming and outgoing..

Do you see a black box with broken file image ?
McAfee is not set as an 'Addon' Extensions . Only LIghtning
The image is just not there...no broken file image
Everything is now working again, HTML is now correct and any graphic or illustration is no longer being stripped out.
The only remaining mystery is I have NO idea what changed between today and three days ago that suddenly put everything right
