A friend has a problem with her emails not being received into thunderbird.

She has a Virgin email account but is using John Lewis as an internet provider.

The message "Could not connect to mail server - email address - the connection was refused.

I've put that error into google and found a variety of answers. Some said its the internet provider but when I spoke with the John Lewis internet helpdesk they said its nothing to do with them.

I've also tried resetting the email password and updated thinderbird accordingly but its still coming up with the same error. The internet speed seems to be OK and constant. Emails are being sent even with this error but not copied into the sent folder. Some emails are being received too - its very strange.

Any advice appreciated.

This was a duplicate post. The problem was solved, apparently Virgin Media had a problem in the local area and a number of people could not access their email with Virgin. Problem is now solved.

my guess, and it is a guess, is that Virgin do not allow their mail accounts to b accessed from any other providers internet connection. That is you must connect to the internet with virgin to access virgin mail.
