Marking a message as "read" or "unread" based on the time of its showing is not properly. It should be dependent on really opening, not displaying (showing).

I found an answer on Thunderbird help pages, but the answer was about the option "open" a message, while the programme in fact makrs my e-mail on the basis of showing (displaying) only.

Mine display the time they were sent. If they were to show anything else, I'd expect it to be the time the recieving server processed it. I really wouldn't ever expect it to show the time I opened it. What time would it show before being opened?

Do you have a reference to any standard or RFC that indicates it should do as you expect?

You appear to be expecting a distinction between "displayed" and "opened". Some users do seem to think that simply selecting a message (so it shows in the lower pane) somehow should not be treated as it having been read. Thunderbird doesn't recognize this nuance. If you select it, then it can be displayed. Therefore it has been "viewed" and Thunderbird considers that equivalent to "read". If you don't want it to do this, try adjusting the timer. Tools|Options|Display, IIRC.

Personally, I do all of my email reading in the lower pane. I don't use the separate window or a tab and I don't double-click messages. In this mode of use, there is no distinction between selected, opened, viewed or read.

All the mail apps on my tablet seem to do pretty much the same, too. And all show the time/date put there by a server.

Writing "time" I meant only duration, time period, not a time of receiving of the message. Yes, I expect a distinction between "displayed" and "opened" in fact. Adjusting of the timer doesn't solve the problem and generally what is it for (this option?). Even assuming your reading way in the lower pane: when the timer is set to longer time, the short messages could be read before the time has elapsed. When the timer is set to short time, It marks some messages pointed only for a short time accidentially (even when I didn't read them). Moreover it is always problem of the first message in the e-mail list: after every opening of the Thunderbird, the first message is always marked as read. Lets assume situation, I've opened Thunderbird, but something disturbed me and I had to go away, so I turned off the computer. Then by next opening of the e-mail client, when there are some new messages, the cursor goes again to the first (the newest) and the first message from the earlier opening of the Thunerbird got marked as "read".
