Why are incoming Word & Excel attachments always protected view

Every email I receive that has a Microsoft Word or Excel attachment, when I open the file it is in "protected view". How can I change this? It never used to be this way. It's like a default now. Using Tbird 45.4.0, Windows 7

Microsoft changed how they open documents that come as mail attachments. I think you can change some settings in Microsoft office to change it back. But as I do not use Office I have no first hand knowledge of how to use new features. I do quite nicely with the free Libre Office. It does word the way I want to do word. Without that silly ribbon.
