Dear Volunteer

Every time I open my inbox, the emails that I have already read show up as unread -- again and again. I have also checked "mark as read" many times --- but it doesn't help.

I have run every possible scan for viruses and even had a computer tech do other scans--- but the problem does not go away.

Please help. Thank you so much. Regards Annie

Please confirm what settings you have here: 'Menu icon' > 'Options' > 'Options' > 'Display' > 'Advanced' tab

See image below. It shows my settings. Do you have exactly the same ? If no, please tell me what you have...better still post an image.

I'm presuming this is effecting the emails in the 'Inbox' folder. Is this a pop or imap mail account?

Try repairing the index.

  • Right click on Inbox folder and select 'Properties'
  • Click on 'Repair folder' button
  • click on OK
  • Select another folder and then reselect 'Inbox'.

How many emails do you have in Inbox ?

What size is the folder? 'Menu icon' > 'Options' > 'Layout' > select 'Folder Pane Columns' then enable the 'Size' column - see second image below.

How frequently do you compact the Inbox folder? If not very often, please do the following: Move all good wanted emails into other suitable folders for organising and storage. Delete any emails you do not want. When Inbox is empty, right click on Inbox folder and select 'Compact'.

Normally, you do not need to empty the Inbox in order to compact the folder, but if you suspect any corruption then it is a wise idea to remove the emails first...just in case.
