The short answer is you do not.

Micrisift have made a commercial decision to not support open calendar formats. Instead they insist access be through their proprietary system (with attendant royalties and licenses), or read only as an ICS file.

So do I have to retype everything or is there a work around

I would assume you can export the calendar from outlook as an ICS file. Thunderbird can import those. Or the calendar can
