I cannot view my old/already read emails, they do not show at all

I opened Thunderbird this morning and read all my new emails. I usually keep the emails that I want to refer back to and delete what i don't want. When i went to the computer a few hours later I was able to see emails that just came in but not able to see any of the previously read emails.
